How do I open an account with the laboratory?

The laboratory will forward the relevant application forms upon request which needs to be completed and returned to the laboratory (lab@ppecb.com).

How is MUC applied to interpretation of the results on the certificate?

The expanded measurement of uncertainty should be subtracted from and added to the analytical result after correction for recovery. The true value would lie between this range.

Eg; Paprika tested for Aflatoxin B1 (Acceptable limit is 10ug/kg)

The analysis of the paprika gave the following results for aflatoxin B1 (analytical result with corrected recovery still to be determined);

3,0 ug/kg (40% expanded MUC, 75% recovery) = 4.0 ug/kg +/- 1.6ug/kg i.e range 2.4- 5.6ug/kg

How long does it take for results to be produced?

Testing lead times vary for different service offerings but can range from 8hrs (same day service) to 72 hrs.

How much sample is required for pesticide analysis?

1kg: fresh produce

500g: groundnuts

Is your laboratory ISO 17025 accredited?

The PPECB Laboratory is ISO 17025 accredited for its mycotoxin, pesticide and fats programmes. As the laboratory expands its scope of accreditation on an annual basis, the PPECB website is updated accordingly and communiqués are sent out to existing customers.

What are the acceptable levels of mycotoxins in food commodities?

For the export market, compliance to the requirements of the importing country is essential. In South Africa, compliance to R1145 (Regulations governing tolerance for fungus produced toxins in foodstuffs,) and R1087 (Regulations relating to farm feeds) is used to guide one on the acceptable levels of mycotoxins in foods and feed.
